Over the next few decades, the Middle East and North Africa will experience less rainfall and more extreme temperatures, according to a recent report by the World Bank.Climate change isn’t a debate. It’s a reality, and for the Middle East that reality means preparing for a future that may include an increasing scarcity of food and water. And that’s just one region of the world.

Kids may say the darndest things, but they also write the loveliest things. Our employees in Mexico City found this out after a recent volunteer activity in which they collected stationery and other items, pictured below. They used the materials to make back-to-school kits – more than 950 in all – for underserved kids.

When it comes to improving women’s health, do men have a role?Absolutely. That’s a guiding principle behind the Levi Strauss Foundation’s support for BSR’s HERproject, a program that advances the health and well-being of thousands of women in apparel factories where Levi Strauss & Co.’s products are made. This time, the Levi Strauss Foundation and our partner in Pakistan, Aga Khan University, is supporting a HERproject program…for men.

As we grapple with sustainability challenges, we often forget that we’re not the first organisms learning to live here for the long haul. All organisms on Planet Earth have found a way to fit in – and interact – with others in a way that creates conditions conducive to life.As humans, we can learn from those organisms. Here at Biomimicry 3.8, we’re working with designers and others at Levi Strauss & Co. to bring biology to the design table. We believe nature can provide insights into sustainable design practices. And we love to watch as people reconnect with nature.

On June 15th I had the extraordinary honor of receiving a Levi Strauss Pioneer Award. Without hesitation, I would like to dedicate it to the staff at Alliance Health Project (formerly the AIDS Health Project). On most days, I think of myself as an accidental activist. In 1982, when I left the Midwest and moved to San Francisco to fulfill my psychiatry residency, I thought I would live in anonymity as a gay doctor with a private practice. All that changed when the AIDS epidemic struck.

It takes one motorboat ride and a half-hour walk through the Guatemala highlands to get to my job every morning, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. My name is Delia Mendoza. I work for Mercado Global, a cutting-edge nonprofit, Fair Trade organization that connects indigenous Guatemalan women like me to sales opportunities in the United States.

In the ongoing intrastate rivalry between San Francisco and Los Angeles, there’s one category in which compact San Francisco has a definite advantage: bicycling to work.At least, that’s my perspective.

If you’ve ever built a bicycle – perhaps in the wee hours of your child’s birthday morning – you know it can be a bit of a challenge.
That didn’t stop more than 50 Levi Strauss & Co. employees from signing up for the YBike volunteer project on the company’s annual Community Day today.
YBike is a San Francisco YMCA youth program, which introduces the responsibility and freedom that bicycles bring to urban kids who might otherwise not know.
