Ordinary People. Amazing Stories

In Tuesday’s State of the Union address, President Obama talked about America being “the story of ordinary people who dare to dream.”

Hard-working people are striving to overcome adversity all the time, right in our own backyard. Imagine, for example, purchasing your own home only months after being on the verge of homelessness. That’s exactly what Helena Edwards did -- with some help from EARN, a Bay Area non-profit that helps low-income families build prosperity by matching their savings.

In "Somewhere," Dorff's a Levi's Guy

In her new movie “Somewhere,” Sofia Coppola had a specific vision for her leading man: He’d be a Levi’s® guy.

Actor Stephen Dorff plays her vision – in the role of Johnny Marco, a hard-living Hollywood movie star. Marco is forced to reevaluate his life when his 11-year-old daughter unexpectedly shows up at the Chateau Marmont – his hotel home – with nowhere else to go.

Levi's Malaysian Flair

What would the Malaysians do? Well, when it comes to designing a tee, we now know!

The Levi’s® Malaysia team recently ran a nationwide contest for their Facebook fans. Participants purchased a tee from the Levi’s® DIY – as in Do It Yourself – Collection and decorated it with their own flair.

Once the masterpiece was completed, each contestant simply snapped a picture and uploaded it to our Malaysia Facebook page.

A Bold Road Trip -- Demi and Slight, Too

One of the best parts of working for a global company is seeing how the same product is marketed in different parts of the world. Take Levi’s® Curve ID jeans for women, for instance.

If you’re in the States, you’re probably familiar with the marketing campaign for this revolutionary new approach to woman’s jeans – in which the fit is based on shape, not size. You can see the jeans now on the Levi.com U.S. site.

Green Jeans...and More

There’s a derogatory term, "green washing," in environmental circles. It’s based on a more familiar one, “white washing,” and refers to a company that may not be doing much in the way of sustainability, but likes to make you think it is.

I’m proud to say that Levi Strauss & Co. takes sustainability seriously. In fact, we’re working to build sustainability into everything we do. And with that in mind, we wanted to highlight, below, some of the company’s accomplishments in 2010.

Destined for Denizen

Looking back, I don’t think anything happened by chance.

My affair with Levi Strauss began when I was in design school in Chennai, on the Southeast coast of India, where I grew up. I remember spending a couple of sleepless nights digging up the history of Levi Strauss & Co. for a presentation I had to give. Little did I know that I would later be closely associated with the company.

Water, Water Everywhere, But...

Some 72% of the earth is covered by water. It's all around us, but that doesn't mean we can waste it. Just the opposite, in fact.

It’s a complicated issue, but one thing almost all of us can do is...use less water.

For individuals like you and me, that might mean shorter showers, not letting the faucet run when you brush your teeth, or maybe washing your clothes less often.
