Levi Strauss didn’t invent blue jeans to make history. At the time, he was simply doing business and trying to meet the needs of his customers – hard working Californians, trying to carve out their piece of the American dream. But he did make history. And last night, in Sacramento, his efforts – and his business and philanthropic legacy – were recognized by his adopted state.

If you’ve ever spent any time in Lesotho, in the heart of South Africa, you’ll know that in many ways it’s still a developing country . It’s also a place where people work to make some of our products.

Here’s the scene: A soccer camp for the children of Levi’s employees in South Africa. In addition to sharpening their skills, the kids also learn about HIV/AIDS. Judging from the questions they ask, it’s clear the kids don’t discuss this issue with their parents or teachers. It’s good they had this opportunity.Another scene: An HIV/AIDS training session for Levi’s retail employees in South Africa. A counselor offers an HIV test to anyone interested. Several of the female team members agreed. None of the guys did. Still, the offer stands.

Here at Levi Strauss & Co. we’re focused on building sustainability into everything we do. The goal? Have our profitable growth help restore the environment. We know that we can’t tackle this challenge alone – so we’re talking with a lot of different people about what we can do together. Among them, students.

Say, you run a business that involves moving goods – clothes, perhaps – from one country to another. And say, the various countries your goods pass through impose tariffs that keep changing, making it difficult for you to keep track. Are you paying too much? Too little?

We weren’t really sure what to expect when we made the gesture: Levi Strauss & Co. would donate $1,000 to the Junior Giants for every home run hit by the San Francisco Giants in their 2010 World Series match-up with the Texas Rangers. Now we do. Seven home runs, including one by Edgar Renteria in last night’s fifth and final game of the series, makes the total $7,000.

It’s safe to say the bullying hasn’t stopped. But we’d like to think the recent focus on the problem is having an impact. Of course, it’s a shame that it comes only after the recent, tragic suicides of at least five young people – bullied because they were either gay or perceived “different” in some way.

What was it – five teens committing suicide in the past few weeks as a result of bullying? And those were just the ones that we heard about. These tragedies occurred because the bullies believed their targets – the victims – to be gay. But no matter what you think about a person’s sexual orientation, you have to agree that bullying is bad.
