Earlier this year, the Contemporary Jewish Museum opened its latest exhibit, Levi Strauss: A History of American Style, featuring the largest display of Levi Strauss & Co. archives outside of our own collection.

Unfortunately, the museum was forced to close its doors for public safety reasons and help curb the community spread of COVID-19. So, they got creative and took the exhibit online. Now you can experience Levi Strauss: A History of American Style from the comfort of home through a virtual exhibition.

Guide yourself through the floor plan to see installation views and read exhibition wall texts. The exhibition showcases the life of Levi Strauss and the worldwide phenomenon of the now iconic blue jean. The full exhibit features more than 250 items from the Levi Strauss & Co. Archives, including garments, advertisements, photographs, and ephemera. But our favorite item highlighted in the virtual tour is the AMC Gremlin, outfitted in automobile-grade denim with orange stitching and an orange tab.

In addition to the virtual display, the CJM is also doing a series of Facebook Live talks featuring CJM Master Educator Cara Buchalter. During her live sessions, Cara brings the art and objects on view to life with engaging behind-the-scenes stories.

All sessions can be found by visiting The Contemporary Jewish Museum on Facebook or check out these upcoming Facebook Live sessions:

  • May 3: The story behind the Canadian Tuxedo and Bing Crosby’s birthday
  • May 8: Eadweard Muybridge and Levi’s San Francisco
  • May 20: Happy Birthday, blue jeans! The story of the patent

We are proud of our partnership with the CJM and all the steps taken to ensure those interested can interact and virtually visit the exhibition while adhering to current safety measures.
