They say you can find anything for sale on eBay. How about a healthy, sustainable home?
This week, the answer is: Yes.
As the founder and editor of ecofabulous, I’ve had the unique pleasure of working with Reclaimed Space and over 20 eco-conscious manufacturers to create and build what we’re calling Modern Living – a combination interactive exhibit and home – for Dwell on Design, the West Coast’s largest design event.
If you’re in Los Angeles this week, I encourage you to pay a visit.
What makes our Showhouse so special is that it features the latest in innovative, smart design, such as energy efficient appliances, a living wall, water-saving faucets and, get this, extraordinary feats of reuse – all without sacrificing style.
So … you ask … what constitutes an extraordinary feat of reuse?
Well, since you’re reading this blog post on Levi Strauss & Co.’s website, you could probably guess that it involves blue jeans and, of course, style.
How about recycled denim – as insulation!
The folks at Bonded Logic have turned denim into a superior performing natural fiber product while maintaining health, safety and sustainability.
I mean, what could be more natural for insulation than reused cotton?
Something else Levi’s® jeans is doing right now is its Care to Air contest – encouraging everyone to come up with a new and better way to air-dry their laundry, because the most effective way to reduce the climate impact of a pair of jeans is to air dry.
And then there’s the eBay connection. The Showhouse will be auctioned on eBay during the conference, with a portion of the proceeds donated to Global Green USA, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering a global shift in values toward a sustainable, secure future by reconnecting humanity with the environment.
Even if you can’t bid on our Modern Living Showhouse, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to check it out online. It might give you a few ideas for your own home – whether you’re choosing new appliances, putting on a fresh coat of paint, or simply looking for some salvaged materials to reuse & repurpose for a dash of reclaimed style!
