Hung Out to Dry?

How many times have you said to yourself, “There’s gotta be a better way?”

It usually happens when you’re doing something that causes you to break a sweat. So, it may not come to mind when you’re doing your laundry, but … we’re convinced … there’s gotta be a better way … to dry your clothes.

Better, that is, than simply throwing your wet stuff in the dryer and hitting Start.

Why bother thinking about it?

Well, Levi Strauss & Co. research shows that if you change how you wash a pair of jeans – from warm water to cold – and how you dry them – from machine dry to line – you can reduce the climate-change impact of caring for them by more than 50 percent. 50 percent!

I’m a line dryer myself. I just like the way a pair of jeans feels after it’s been, um, hung out to dry. The energy saved – and smaller utility bill – is a nice plus. It’s a no-frills solution in practice around the world, as this Washington Post article and gallery show.

But … maybe there’s a better way than the old clothesline. And maybe you can think of it.

Starting today, the company is accepting entries for original air-drying solutions from green pioneers and inventors. Enter at www.levi.com/care

With $10,000 in prizes, a little of your creative ingenuity could pay off – for yourself, your clothes … and the planet.

So, is there a better way?

Disappointed 512 (not verified) - Sep 01 2012

Extremely disappointed to learn that you stopped making the 512 model. Just about the only jeans I truly liked, and fit me like a glove. Other models suggested at the store just don't fit right, or have a ... zipper... Please LISTEN to your customers and bring back the 512 model!

Editor's note: Thank you for your comment. I will share this with our merchant and design teams within the Levi's® brand.

I am happy to see so many women upset about the loss of the original LEVI'S that we grew up with. Stretch jeans don't look as good as cotton jeans and they are not as warm during the winter as cotton jeans. They slouch on the waist and make women look bad when they have to pull them up all the time. LEVIS made their millions on good ole 100% cotton, that should say something.

512's where r u?!! Those were the only jeans I like. I tried on every other style jean in the levi store and walked out empty handed. Please bring them back!

Tell, me why or why Levi stopped producing the 512's?..I finally found the perfect jean and have been wearnig them for years. The fit like jeans should fit, I'm 49 years old and don't need a pair of baggie butt jeans like a teenager. There must be others out there that feel the same way..Please bring the 512's for men back..I would pay anything for them.

Editor's note: Hi Mike, and thanks for your comment. As you have discovered, we do occasionally update our products and make line changes based on consumer input. You may want to try our Men's 513® style. I'm told it's very similar to the 512®. You can check it out here. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

I SOOOO agree with just about everyone here. PLEEEEZE Bring back the 100% cotton jeans. Stretch SUCKS! I wish you would let us have a choice. I have looked on line and I only found one pair of 100% jeans and I didnt want to pay $80 plus shipping. I would rather try them on so I know how they fit and not pay shipping. Pleeeeze bring them back to stores and outlets....PLEEEZE!!!

Editor's note: Thanks for your comment. I will definitely share your thoughts with our product managers.

The search doesn't come up with 100% cotton jeans either. I just tried it and all the women's jeans were only 99% cotton. And the links posted in earlier comments are also not 100% cotton. Is there anything new? I only wear 100% cotton jeans.

Editor's note: Hi. Sorry you didn't have any luck. I found these: Non-stretch Skinny, Made in the USA Vintage Taper, Blanket-lined Skinny, and the Elephant Bell. I hope one of these works for you in terms of style and price. Thanks for your comment!

I have been searching high and low for 100% cotton jeans everywhere! I came across this blog during a search and followed the advice and searched Levi's website for "womens 100% cotton jeans" Have you looked at the results of that search? The options that came up were nothing that I would wear! All of it was odd looking. Why can we just not have normal jeans anymore? Obviously there are people who want them and would buy them. Jean shopping now is a chore, and I always come home empty handed. None of my friends like the stretch jeans but there is no other options to be found. It was a terrible idea to put the "stretch" jeans.

Editor's note: Thanks, Jennifer. I'm sorry you didn't like what you found in your search. I'll pass along your comment to the folks in the Levi's® brand, so they're aware of what you're after in women's jeans. Thanks, again, for your comment.

Breeze drying is a good choice. Hang a clothes line on your windows to allow air to breeze dry your garments. Washers do their work in spin drying clothes which will render the garments comparatively dry. Breeze drying can finish the work off.
