While design has a limited effect on our environmental footprint, we view both our design process and our business models as powerful opportunities to ensure sustainability at every other stage of the life cycle of our products – from the choice of materials to manufacturing to consideration of how the garments will be used and reused.
That means thinking from the outset about how we can dramatically reduce our use of natural resources, increase adoption of alternatives to virgin raw materials and strive to “close the loop” with an eye towards fully circular products and a truly circular economy. And it means always remembering who and what our products are for – people who want stylish, durable, practical and sustainable garments that are intentionally designed to exist in our world and encourage authentic self-expression.
We launched Water<Less® in 2011 to shift how decisions are made in the design process and help reduce the amount of water used in the finishing process. Since then, we have saved more than three billion liters of water in the manufacturing of our products. Today, some 67 percent of Levi’s® are made Water<Less®; that will increase to 80 percent by 2020. We have also open sourced the technology so others can use it to save water in their products as well.Levi’s® Wellthread™
Launched in 2015, Wellthread™ products address sustainability at every step of the supply chain. Each item is made with less water using a single-fiber strategy that allows for closed loop recycling. The denim utilizes extra-long Supima® cotton grown in the U.S. for enhanced durability, and all products are produced in factories that participate in our Worker Well-being initiative. The Spring 2019 collaboration with Outerknown features jeans and a trucker jacket made with a groundbreaking “cottonized hemp” blend, fully recyclable nylon board shorts and t-shirts made from recycled cotton. Working with Google, we created the Levi’s® Commuter™ Trucker Jacket with Jacquard™, which is woven through with conductive Jacquard™ Thread that allows you to link to your mobile device via Bluetooth. Wearers can control music or get directions with a tap of the cuff, and the jacket updates itself with any new software and no need for additional accessories – demonstrating that cutting-edge design technology can be literally built in and built to last.
