Founded in San Francisco over 170 years ago, Levi Strauss & Co. is still proud to call the city our home today. That’s why this spring we launched “These City Walls,” an initiative to commission 25 new murals across San Francisco, as part of our ongoing commitment to support the city’s comeback through volunteerism, grantmaking and community programming.
Now, we’re especially excited to unveil “Beneath the Bay,” the latest, and largest, of the murals, located right across the street from our headquarters.
Painted by our partners in the initiative, Daniel Pan, Antoine Marnata and other members of 1AM Projects, with support from the Port of San Francisco, “Beneath the Bay” is located at Pier 19 ½ and celebrates the diverse communities, history and natural beauty of the San Francisco Bay. Measuring roughly 4,000 square feet and rendered in a surreal, playful style across three large panels, the mural highlights the stories and icons that define the waterfront. A true community project, the paint was donated by Benjamin Moore, and Rain Guard provided a weather-proof clear coating to ensure the mural lasts as long as possible.
“We wanted to pay homage to San Francisco’s deep maritime connection and the marine life, pop culture and heritage that has defined this area for decades,” said Daniel. “The Embarcadero was at one time one of the busiest rail corridors in the world, and the San Francisco piers have a long history of representing commercial, passenger and public service. We wanted ‘Beneath the Bay’ to encapsulate that feeling of coming home, while celebrating the iconic beauty and symbols of the city.”
“Beneath the Bay” is the fifth mural completed in the initiative, and there are roughly 20 more underway. San Francisco locals and visitors alike have already been enjoying other completed murals throughout the city, such as “West Coast’in’” in Potrero Hill and “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” in Union Square.
“Seeing ‘Beneath the Bay’ come to life at Pier 19 ½, in such a prominent area of the city, is truly special,” said Michael Martin, acting executive director of the Port of San Francisco. “The piece provides a moment of joy and reflection for the thousands of people who pass it every day. The Port is proud to support projects like these that celebrate our city’s heritage and create vibrant experiences along our one-of-a-kind waterfront.”
San Francisco is our home, and we’re proud to champion community, art and local revitalization — one mural, one community initiative at a time.
“Our commitment to San Francisco runs deep. Through initiatives like ‘These City Walls,’ we’re not just beautifying spaces — we’re investing in the cultural heartbeat of our city,” said Alexis Bechtol, director of community affairs at LS&Co. “Supporting revitalization efforts ensures that San Francisco remains vibrant, inclusive and inspiring for generations to come.”
