We’ve been proud to lead pioneering efforts in the crucial fight for equality, from integrating our factories before the law required it to granting domestic partnership health benefits more than 20 years ago. We also have been — and will continue to be — vocal supporters of marriage equality.

Today, we continued to support the right for all Americans to marry, regardless of sexual orientation. Levi Strauss & Co., along with 378 other employers and employer organizations, signed an amicus brief urging the high court to consider the burdens imposed on both employers and employees by a fractured legal landscape with no uniform rule on same-sex marriage.

The amicus curiae brief was filed in the Obergefell v. Hodges case, and urges the US Supreme Court to affirm a uniform principle that all couples share in the right to marry. The brief argues that the existing, confused legal landscape places significant burdens on employers and their employees — making it increasingly hard to conduct business. If successful, the court’s eventual decision could standardize the law and provide marriage equality across the country.

We believe that treating all people equally and fairly is good for business and that the success of a business depends on the ability to recruit and retain the best employees in a global market for talent — regardless of their gender, race or sexual orientation.

Change doesn’t always happen quickly, but we’re committed to the fight for equality over the long term.
