Build-A-Bike

If you’ve ever built a bicycle – perhaps in the wee hours of your child’s birthday morning – you know it can be a bit of a challenge.

That didn’t stop more than 50 Levi Strauss & Co. employees from signing up for the YBike volunteer project on the company’s annual Community Day today.

YBike is a San Francisco YMCA youth program, which introduces the responsibility and freedom that bicycles bring to urban kids who might otherwise not know.

Green Jeans...and More

There’s a derogatory term, "green washing," in environmental circles. It’s based on a more familiar one, “white washing,” and refers to a company that may not be doing much in the way of sustainability, but likes to make you think it is.I’m proud to say that Levi Strauss & Co. takes sustainability seriously. In fact, we’re working to build sustainability into everything we do. And with that in mind, we wanted to highlight, below, some of the company’s accomplishments in 2010.

Water, Water Everywhere, But...

Some 72% of the earth is covered by water. It's all around us, but that doesn't mean we can waste it. Cutting Carbon in the World's Workshop

It’s a major manufacturing base for garments and textiles, electronics, toys, and much more. In fact, there’s so much manufacturing here, the Pearl River Delta is sometimes called “the world’s workshop.”

Beyond 'Paper or Plastic'

I confess: When I go to the grocery store, I sometimes forget my canvas bags. When the clerk asks the inevitable question, “Paper or plastic?” I’m stuck – asking myself, which one is better? These days it seems like everyone’s trying to make greener, more environmentally conscious choices.

We're Surrounded. (And It's a Good Thing.)

If there’s anything I like less than moving, I can’t think of it right now. Oh, okay. War. Pestilence. Hunger. Stuff like that. But moving isn’t far behind. Even the obligatory moving cuisine of beer and pizza can’t make the badness go away. We’ve just wrapped up moving day at the home office of Levi Strauss & Co. Many of my colleagues and I had been holed up in temporary quarters – just across the way here at Levi’s Plaza – while workers fully renovated the main building.
