Public Policy LeadershipMaximizing energy efficiency and addressing climate change lie at the heart of our efforts to restore the planet. We have been, and will continue to be, outspoken champions for public policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gases. Through participation in the Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy (BICEP), we have joined other global companies in calling for leadership and support from the U.S. Administration and Congress to develop energy and climate legislation that promotes energy efficiency, encourages energy and climate innovation, and reduces overall greenhouse gas emissions. Goals and Progress In 2009, LS&Co. publicly announced that we would reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 11% by the end of 2011 from a 2007 baseline. We are on track to meet this goal, pending third party verification. A few key initiatives helping us meet our 2011 target include:
Greenhouse Gas Inventories and AssessmentsWe are committed to tracking and reporting our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Our first GHG inventory was conducted in 2006 and included all energy usage and GHG emissions from facilities located in our Americas region. In 2007, we expanded our inventory to include facilities from all regions. Both 2006 and 2007 inventories were verified by a third party organization that was approved by the EPA Climate Leaders Program and CPA Climate Leaders Program (respectively). Since 2008, we have annually reported our GHG inventory to the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP). Each inventory is verified by a third party under The Climate Registry General Reporting Protocol and publicly available on The Climate Registry’s website.
Please note a report title reflects the year in which the emissions were generated; the report itself is created the following year. For example, the "2010 CDP" describes emissions generated in 2010; the report was compiled and submitted in 2011. In 2010, Levi Strauss & Co. was selected as one of 60 companies worldwide to road-test two new protocols to measure GHG emissions. One was designed to measure the climate change impact of a product and the other to measure the climate change impact of our entire supply chain. These protocols were created by the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development and have been finalized as of October 2011. Facilities and Retail StoresWe’ve made a commitment to improve energy efficiency in all of our owned and operated facilities and retail stores. From next-generation lighting systems to maintenance programs that increase the efficiency of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units, we’re pursuing innovative solutions that reduce energy consumption and minimize our contribution to climate change.
Logistics and SupplyExamining energy use in our transportation logistics and global supply chain is essential to our goal of minimizing impact and creating a more sustainable business.
Customer UseIn 2007, we performed a lifecycle assessment of our Levi’s® 501® jeans and Dockers® Original Khakis. Over 400 MJ of energy are consumed during the full product lifecycle of a pair of Levi's® 501s®, with sources ranging from factory operations to heating water for warm washing at home. In response, we launched three initiatives:

If there’s anything I like less than moving, I can’t think of it right now. Oh, okay. War. Pestilence. Hunger. Stuff like that. But moving isn’t far behind. Even the obligatory moving cuisine of beer and pizza can’t make the badness go away. We’ve just wrapped up moving day at the home office of Levi Strauss & Co. Many of my colleagues and I had been holed up in temporary quarters – just across the way here at Levi’s Plaza – while workers fully renovated the main building.

Whether you read it in a newspaper or get it from someone “in the know,” you never really know if you have the best information unless you get it from the source. Otherwise, it’s like that game, “Telephone,” where one person tells another, who tells another and, in the end, the facts are lost.

The call to action was simple enough – design a new way to air dry your clothes that would eliminate the need for a dryer and improve on the basic clothesline. Levi Strauss & Co. called it the Care to Air Design Challenge, and those of us here at Myoo Create spread the word – to the whole world. The only caveat to entering was that design submissions had to be innovative, covetable, effective and sustainable.

You know our product – particularly Levi’s® and Dockers® – but we’re betting there’s a lot about Levi Strauss & Co. you don’t know.
