Bullying. Bad – No Matter What.

What was it – five teens committing suicide in the past few weeks as a result of bullying? And those were just the ones that we heard about. These tragedies occurred because the bullies believed their targets – the victims – to be gay. But no matter what you think about a person’s sexual orientation, you have to agree that bullying is bad.

Innovation at Risk

Innovation may not be the first word that comes to mind when you think about Levi Strauss & Co., but it’s as much as part of us as cotton and zippers. After all, it takes a lot of innovation for the company that invented blue jeans to remain a global apparel leader more than a century later – known for not only what we make, but also how we make it.

Beyond 'Paper or Plastic'

I confess: When I go to the grocery store, I sometimes forget my canvas bags. When the clerk asks the inevitable question, “Paper or plastic?” I’m stuck – asking myself, which one is better? These days it seems like everyone’s trying to make greener, more environmentally conscious choices.

We're Surrounded. (And It's a Good Thing.)

If there’s anything I like less than moving, I can’t think of it right now. Oh, okay. War. Pestilence. Hunger. Stuff like that. But moving isn’t far behind. Even the obligatory moving cuisine of beer and pizza can’t make the badness go away. We’ve just wrapped up moving day at the home office of Levi Strauss & Co. Many of my colleagues and I had been holed up in temporary quarters – just across the way here at Levi’s Plaza – while workers fully renovated the main building.

It's Time to Ban Sandblasting

One of the reasons jeans remain so popular is that each pair takes on a unique pattern of wear and tear that changes over time. It doesn’t look old – it looks “lived in.” More personal. More “you.”A few years ago, designers realized that they could get a head start during the finishing process, creating a pair of jeans that already appears worn when you buy it.

Well Hung

One of the coolest things about art, is that different people see different things in the same piece. In “Nothing is What it Seems,” Canadian Caleb Hill saw…a way to air dry his clothes. What judges saw in the Levi Strauss & Co. Care to Air Design Challenge was a winner.

Clothes Dryers: Beware!

The call to action was simple enough – design a new way to air dry your clothes that would eliminate the need for a dryer and improve on the basic clothesline.Levi Strauss & Co. called it the Care to Air Design Challenge, and those of us here at Myoo Create spread the word – to the whole world. The only caveat to entering was that design submissions had to be innovative, covetable, effective and sustainable.

A Troubadour For Our Times

This week, Annie Lennox headlined a historic rally of global AIDS leaders and advocates in Vienna, Austria, to underscore the importance of human rights in the response to HIV/AIDS. The event drew thousands of local residents and delegates of the 18th International AIDS Conference taking place.Wearing a shirt reading “HIV POSITIVE” – a striking statement of solidarity with all those living with the virus around the world – Lennox bounded on stage and belted out "Little Bird," the up-tempo anthem:I am just a troubled soul who’s weighted to the ground / Give me the strength to carry on till I can lay this burden down.”

We All Want to Work

What if your own health situation kept you from helping others with the same health issues? What if your life experience and expertise prevented you from doing your job? That’s the situation for many of my friends – friends who are HIV-positive and working in the global HIV/AIDS response.

HIV/AIDS – From the Briefing Room to the Board Room. And Beyond.

Here’s something to think about: Every 9½ minutes, someone in the United States is infected with HIV.With wars, economic issues and an oil spill dominating the headlines this summer, it’s not surprising that such HIV/AIDS facts slip off the front pages of newspapers and news websites. But it’s disturbing to see such a fact now, some 30 years after HIV first captured our attention, especially given that HIV transmission can largely be avoided.
