My last look at Levi's® was in elementary school. And I still own the classic pair perloined from my father's Lower East Side men's clothing store, long before the neighborhood attracted European tourists paying top Euro to stay in trendy boutique hotels and shop BoHo chic.

Walk past all too many European “High Street” stores -- including our own -- and you’ll find doors wide open. On top of that, you’ll be hit by a blast of air – an air curtain – that separates inside from out. It’s as if the retailer is trying to heat or cool – depending on the season – the great outdoors. That’s not the goal, of course. Such a doorway is simply a retailer’s way of saying, “We’re open for business – please come in!” But it does make you wonder.

Have you ever had the experience of going to a foreign country and once you hit the streets you suddenly felt absolutely at home? That was my experience on a recent trip to Australia.I've just returned from Down Under. My traveling partners? Four pairs of vintage Levi’s® jeans: the XX, the 501® jean from 1879, also called The World’s Oldest Pair of Jeans; the Nevada, found in a dusty mining town; Lady Levi’s® jeans worn at an Arizona dude ranch in the 1930s; and a fun pair of girl’s striped flares from 1969.
