It’s easy to get caught up in all the talk about environmental sustainability and, then, wonder what you can do to really make a difference.Truth is, you don’t have to buy a hybrid vehicle or put solar panels on your roof. You can start with something simple: changing the way you do your laundry. We’ve been talking about this ever since Levi Strauss & Co. commissioned a scientific life cycle assessment of a pair of Levi’s® 501® jeans and Dockers® Original Khakis.

Before he performed at the Levi’s® show at New York Fashion Week on the banjo, O’Kane put his carpentry skills to work behind-the-scenes, building benches for similar runway events. But it was his musical skill that caught the ear of the Wall Street Journal reporter Hilke Schellmann, who interviewed O’Kane for a video series featuring interesting odd jobs at Fashion Week.

Walk past all too many European “High Street” stores -- including our own -- and you’ll find doors wide open. On top of that, you’ll be hit by a blast of air – an air curtain – that separates inside from out. It’s as if the retailer is trying to heat or cool – depending on the season – the great outdoors. That’s not the goal, of course. Such a doorway is simply a retailer’s way of saying, “We’re open for business – please come in!” But it does make you wonder.

Imagine this: A group of people, about to have lunch, stand up from their seats. Salad ingredients start to fly. Auspicious Chinese phrases fill the air. Chopsticks are dropped (or should I say, thrown) into the giant salad bowl. Food falls on hands and arms on its way back down to the salad bowl. And aim for height while tossing! The higher the food is tossed into the air, the more fortunes for the coming year!

The whole idea behind our Care Tag for Our Planet is to encourage consumers to reduce the environmental impact of caring for their jeans. Our message is wash your clothes less often, wash in cold water, line or air dry, and donate unneeded clothes.A student at the Melbourne School of Design recently did some research on the whole "wash-less" approach. Turns out, it works just fine!Check out what Masters candidate Tulia Jack discovered -- in this video by the University of Melbourne.

Levi Strauss & Co. and the San Francisco Bay Area have lost a true friend.Warren Hellman died Sunday of leukemia.Warren can best be described as one of a kind. He was a talented financier and passionate about business, bluegrass music, giving back to the community and endurance sports. His direct, self-deprecating demeanor made him equally at home with captains of industry, twenty-year-old hipsters, country music divas, and anyone who shared his enthusiasm for the banjo and marathon running.
