Levi Strauss cared about the community.Upon his death in 1902, the San Francisco Call newspaper noted that his life had been devoted “not only to fostering the highest commercial conditions, but to the moral, social and educational welfare and development of the young men and women of the state.”If Levi were alive today, I think he would be proud to know that his pioneering spirit thrives on through the Levi Strauss Foundation.

“In the voting booth, everyone is equal.”- Barbara BoxerThat quote says it all. Once all the money has been spent and all the words have been spoken – trying to sway your vote – the final decision is yours.Rich or poor, brown, black or white, gay or straight – in the voting booth, each of us is equal. That means an impoverished, 18-year-old student wields as much power as a person of privilege.

This year, we’ve been commemorating the 30th anniversary of our fight against HIV/AIDS. Last night, at a Levi’s® store in New York, we honored three organizations with our most celebrated nonprofit recognition, the Levi Strauss & Co. Pioneer Award.

As the head of the Levi Strauss & Co. global supply chain, one of my responsibilities is to visit vendor factories – where our products are made – all around the globe. This means I come face-to-face with the people who cut, sew and do everything else required to make our jeans, khakis and other clothes. This is a part of my job that I truly enjoy, in large part because I work for a company that is committed to workers’ needs. By walking into apparel factories I see first-hand where we’re making progress – and where we need to do more.Case in point: Cambodia.

Levi Strauss & Co. is not an energy company. But when we add up all the small ways we’re changing our relationship to the energy we consume, it can make a big difference. That’s why we’re pleased to share our 2012 Climate Change Report, which captures progress toward our goal of reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases through maximizing energy efficiency and one day using 100% renewable energy.

Kids may say the darndest things, but they also write the loveliest things. Our employees in Mexico City found this out after a recent volunteer activity in which they collected stationery and other items, pictured below. They used the materials to make back-to-school kits – more than 950 in all – for underserved kids.

Like others across the United States, we at Levi Strauss & Co. know when to step outside for a once-in-a-lifetime event.Space shuttle Endeavour flew over our hometown of San Francisco this morning, as it wrapped up its cross-country tour, on its way to Los Angeles. The shuttle hitched a ride on a Boeing 747, and its Bay Area visit was one of many California flyovers today.Despite the mid-morning haze, the scene from our balconies at Levi’s® Plaza, as Endeavour passed over San Francisco Bay, was more than a little impressive.

Time was, you could count on the town you live in to make sure the parks in your neighborhood were in good shape. But in many cities around the world, including our hometown of San Francisco, budgets aren’t what they once were. And it takes some unique partnerships to keep parks what they should be – safe for kids and families, clean, and fun. We’re proud to be helping out. Working with The Trust for Public Land and some San Francisco companies, the Levi Strauss Foundation is helping fund a parks-improvement initiative for three local parks.

American women won the right to vote in 1920, after nearly seventy-five years of struggle. But in the 1920s, it was still considered a novelty for women to drive automobiles. So when sisters Grace and Ester Robinson were hired by Liberty magazine in 1928 to drive a car – by themselves - from New York to California, it was considered a very big deal.
