I traveled to the town of Wickenburg, Ariz., ten years ago for the first time. I went because I was obsessed with a pair of vintage jeans we have in the company Archives. The pair is now on display in the atrium of our San Francisco Headquarters -- part of an exhibit on the 140th anniversary of the 501® jeans. The jeans belonged to a hard-working miner named Homer Campbell.

This week, Levi Strauss would have turned 184 years old. In honor of this occasion, I thought I'd share four fun and interesting things you might not know about the founder of Levi Strauss & Co. and co-inventor of the blue jean.

You’ve heard us talk a lot about sustainability on this blog. With the company’s commitment to building sustainability into everything we do, there’s often a lot to talk about. Although we do understand that actions speak louder than words. That said, in sharing news about our sustainability work, we’ve recently found ourselves in good company. We are among the top companies in terms of “best practice social media sustainability communication,” as published in the SMI-Wizness Social Media Sustainability Index.Quoting the report on Levi Strauss & Co.

Lewis Carroll once wrote, “…all that is really worth doing is what we do for others.”It’s true, you know. And it’s one of the reasons I enjoy working at Levi Strauss & Co. – because of the company’s commitment to the communities where we work and live. And that includes near Guangzhou, China. Here’s what I mean…Back in December, as part of our Giving Back at the Holidays, a group of employees, led by my colleague Ray Yang, decided to help some rural children.

Every year, we welcome a number of interns to our San Francisco headquarters. Here, these college students – between their junior and senior years – have a great opportunity to learn about apparel and retail from some of the best in the business – the employees of Levi Strauss & Co.This isn’t a summer of grabbing coffee for an executive. It’s a roll-up-your-shirtsleeves, hands-on experience where you work, learn, and contribute. You’ll even make presentations on what you’ve done to brand and company leaders.

In order to help end HIV/AIDS among women, we also have to break the silence about violence against women. This is Christine’s philosophy, and it’s what drives this activist to organize group meetings for women affected by HIV/AIDS in her country of Zambia. All around the world, but particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, violent norms and practices against women put them at a higher risk of contracting HIV. In addition, fear of further abuse or the social stigma surrounding the virus often dissuades women from learning their HIV status — or from sharing it with partners and families.

It’s not every day that you get to build and staff a laboratory dedicated to innovation. From scratch. For me, it’s a dream come true. What may be interesting to some, is that this innovation lab belongs to Levi Strauss & Co., and not some Bay Area high-tech firm.My name’s Bart Sights, and I’ll be directing the company’s Innovation Lab. For the past three years, I’ve been leading our global product development center in Corlu, Turkey.

Earlier this month, LinkedIn announced that it had more than 200 million members as part of its social network of professionals. Now, not every one of those members is looking for a job, but if you have a job opening to fill, it’s a good place to let people know.

About the only time a composting toilet ever crosses my mind is when I stumble upon one at, say, a national park.
So when I read about a new Seattle office building, the Bullitt Center, that features not only composting toilets, but also has all its water needs met solely by rainwater, it caught my attention.

We’ve come to expect companies to give back to their communities, especially during the winter holiday season. Levi Strauss & Co. is certainly not unique in that regard. Over the last year the company and the Levi Strauss Foundation together have invested more than $10 million in the communities where our employees live and work – from supporting the Red Cross after Hurricane Sandy to dozens of pioneering grassroots organizations around the globe.
