Around 100 million people in the European Union spend time volunteering every year. If they were a country, they would be the biggest Member State of the European Union. These volunteers make a positive difference in the lives of millions of people across the continent — they are justifiably described as the 'glue' that holds society together. Wherever people work together to help each other and support those in need, society as a whole benefits, and the volunteers themselves also benefit.

Six years ago, Maria and Luis de la Luz Vazquez had a vision of serving up Mexican food that went beyond the typical fare of tacos and quesadillas. That’s when they began sharing their traditional Mayan cuisine with the world. They began pursuing their dream by cooking out of their own kitchen and selling their specialties out of their home and outside subway stations. They named their company Chaac-Mool, after the Mayan god of rain.

It’s exciting to begin my first day at Levi Strauss & Co. This is not unlike starting at a new school. There’s so much to learn and so many people to meet.Still, I couldn’t be happier. Being asked to lead LS&Co. – with its rich and amazing history – is a tremendous honor.

The world lost a pioneer when Ruth Brinker passed away in San Francisco on August 8, 2011.Ruth was the founder of Project Open Hand, an organization that provides daily meals and support to over 7,000 seniors, people living with HIV/AIDS and the critically ill in the San Francisco Bay Area.Ruth began this work in 1985, just as the HIV/AIDS epidemic began to spread like wildfire. It was then that she noticed her neighbor was suffering from AIDS and lacked access to the most elemental health component: a nutritious meal.

It’s a safe bet all of the clothes you’re wearing right now were made by women. In factories around the world, it’s largely women who cut the patterns, sew the seams and make the buttonholes. So it makes sense that giving these women the information they need to live better, healthier lives would be in the best interest of the factories that hire them. That’s the idea behind HERproject. We first told you about it in March. Now, we have some new information to share.

When Ray Anderson died this week, Planet Earth lost an advocate.Ray was the founder of Interface Inc., the company that makes Flor carpeting, among other floor coverings. It's one of the largest and most successful companies of its kind. He was also a person who, in the mid-1990s, influenced a shift in the company’s environmental strategy. When you consider the role of petrochemicals in making carpet, you understand what a huge shift this was.

The people – that’s what inspired me most when I first lived in Guatemala as a college student. The strength, determination, and spirit of Guatemala’s indigenous people, despite the unspeakable hardships they had endured and the battles they are still fighting today: poverty, discrimination, illiteracy, and malnutrition. The indigenous people of Guatemala completely captured my heart. I felt an obligation to partner with them and to be part of a solution: to connect them to the resources and markets they needed to build a better future.

My love for fashion and design started at a young age when my mom taught me how to sew. Growing up, and even throughout college while I studied neuroscience, I knew I needed an outlet to express my creativity. At the time, I didn’t have a TV, so the sewing machine and stereo became the faithful companions to my design and clothes-making. I created my own tube tops and stretch cropped pants using fabric from the store across the street, and even once made a cocktail dress out of cocktail napkins!

For the past 25 years, I've been taking my kids and grandkids to the Stern Grove Festival. To me, it’s the best concert series in the San Francisco Bay Area, and even better, it’s free to all.Stern Grove is a recreation park in San Francisco that also serves as a venue for the performing arts. It’s dazzling to experience the power of a gospel choir, the rhythms of a salsa band or the ethereal movement of a corps de ballet while picnicking amongst the giant redwood trees.

When you’re in this line of work, pushing for equality for all, you know a pioneer when you see one.The Levi Strauss Foundation started its Pioneers in Justice initiative last year, setting out to support five of the most dynamic, next-generation leaders in the social justice field -- a field advocating for equal rights and opportunities for women, immigrants and other marginalized groups in the United States.
