Every year, we welcome a number of interns to our San Francisco headquarters. Here, these college students – between their junior and senior years – have a great opportunity to learn about apparel and retail from some of the best in the business – the employees of Levi Strauss & Co.This isn’t a summer of grabbing coffee for an executive. It’s a roll-up-your-shirtsleeves, hands-on experience where you work, learn, and contribute. You’ll even make presentations on what you’ve done to brand and company leaders.

In order to help end HIV/AIDS among women, we also have to break the silence about violence against women. This is Christine’s philosophy, and it’s what drives this activist to organize group meetings for women affected by HIV/AIDS in her country of Zambia. All around the world, but particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, violent norms and practices against women put them at a higher risk of contracting HIV. In addition, fear of further abuse or the social stigma surrounding the virus often dissuades women from learning their HIV status — or from sharing it with partners and families.

It’s not every day that you get to build and staff a laboratory dedicated to innovation. From scratch. For me, it’s a dream come true. What may be interesting to some, is that this innovation lab belongs to Levi Strauss & Co., and not some Bay Area high-tech firm.My name’s Bart Sights, and I’ll be directing the company’s Innovation Lab. For the past three years, I’ve been leading our global product development center in Corlu, Turkey.

Earlier this month, LinkedIn announced that it had more than 200 million members as part of its social network of professionals. Now, not every one of those members is looking for a job, but if you have a job opening to fill, it’s a good place to let people know.

About the only time a composting toilet ever crosses my mind is when I stumble upon one at, say, a national park.
So when I read about a new Seattle office building, the Bullitt Center, that features not only composting toilets, but also has all its water needs met solely by rainwater, it caught my attention.

We’ve come to expect companies to give back to their communities, especially during the winter holiday season. Levi Strauss & Co. is certainly not unique in that regard. Over the last year the company and the Levi Strauss Foundation together have invested more than $10 million in the communities where our employees live and work – from supporting the Red Cross after Hurricane Sandy to dozens of pioneering grassroots organizations around the globe.

Since we survived the much-talked-about “end of the world” on December 21, it seems only right to look back at the year that was. After all, it could’ve been our final one, right? Given the news we see every day – from places like Syria and Newtown and beyond – it’s easy to lose sight of the happiness that’s supposed to accompany the holiday season. Here’s a simple wish: I hope that you have an opportunity in the days ahead to reflect on all that’s right in the world and in your own life. And I hope it gives you reason to smile.Peace.

Too often, in every corner of the globe, suspects are treated as convicts the minute they enter the criminal justice system. Whether detainees are tortured and coerced to “confess,” or find themselves unjustly excluded from legal representation — they are, in essence, “guilty until proven innocent.”To help preserve human dignity in these settings, the Levi Strauss Foundation and International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) are supporting pioneering legal advocates from all over the world through the JusticeMakers annual competition.
