“Waste is only waste if we waste it.” – will.i.amThat quote from music artist and producer will.i.am says it quite well.Best known for his work with The Black Eyed Peas, will.i.am has joined with The Coca-Cola Company on an initiative to educate consumers about everyday recycling choices. If the new Levi’s® store in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district looks different from nearby stores, there’s a reason. The simple, refined aesthetic sets the store apart. Natural and materials, including wood, leather and metal, are matched with vintage furniture and lamps. Those aspects, along with the resulting industrial look and feel, reinforces the Levi’s® brand’s commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship.

As a Dockers® menswear designer, it makes sense to me to see how our clothes respond to the real world – even if that world includes a skateboard and some tricks. So I convinced a few friends to join me in putting the Dockers® Alpha Khaki to the test on the streets of San Francisco. The Alpha is a hybrid-sort of design, coupling the best elements of jeans with the more refined characteristics of khaki. What you end up with is a jean’s durability, rugged construction and slim fit – with the slightly more polished effect of a khaki.

One look inside and you’ll realize you don’t need to speak Dutch to understand that Bijenkorf means top-notch shopping. What you may not know is that it is the biggest (and finest) Amsterdam department store. It’s not just shopping – it’s an artfully curated experience. Beyond fine fashion, there’s dining, an art gallery and even a hair salon!

It’s always interesting to me to see what inspires fashion designers. Is it a trip to the desert, a mountain trek, or maybe a walk through a forest? For the Fall 2012 collection, the Levi’s® brand took to the coast. The collection, they say, was built on – and inspired by – the ocean, coastal communities and their associated handcrafted traditions. The collection is available now, online and in stores. For a taste of its inspiration, check out this beautiful video.

Fashion and lifestyle website Refinery 29 threw some compliments our way today. They recently captured some “jeanius street-style snaps" -- their words, not ours -- outside our Levi’s Plaza headquarters in San Francisco. They even said the company “seems to employ the coolest kids around the Bay.”Aw, shucks. And thanks! The pics above are only a fraction of what can be seen in the slideshow on the Refinery 29 site.

When it comes to fashion design, a lot of people’s opinions about the industry are shaped by popular culture and the media – what they see on shows like Project Runway or the snarky comments made about celebrities’ red carpet choices.Sure, that can be fun stuff, but it’s a cheap kind of fun – sort of like a sugar high – with little redeeming social value. And it detracts from what fashion design can be, at its best: a merger of art, innovation, technology, science and sustainability.
