If you’re in to movies, you’ve probably spent some time lately catching up on all things Sundance. Each January, the best and brightest of independent film travel to Park City, Utah, for the wildly popular film festival.

It’s not every day that you get to build and staff a laboratory dedicated to innovation. From scratch. For me, it’s a dream come true. What may be interesting to some, is that this innovation lab belongs to Levi Strauss & Co., and not some Bay Area high-tech firm.My name’s Bart Sights, and I’ll be directing the company’s Innovation Lab. For the past three years, I’ve been leading our global product development center in Corlu, Turkey.

Since we survived the much-talked-about “end of the world” on December 21, it seems only right to look back at the year that was. After all, it could’ve been our final one, right? Today, some highlights from LS&Co. Unzipped during the first half of 2012.In January, we called attention to new Dockers® front man Bear Grylls. His personal story of tragedy and triumph is inspiring, to say the least.

When he left a previous job, a co-worker gave writer Mickey Rapkin a going-away gift -- some new t-shirts. She said, "you can't wear dirty t-shirts anymore."That was the push -- shove? -- that prompted Mickey to finally pay attention to the way he dressed."I didn't know how bad my style was," he admits.Mickey is a guy who has realized that style matters. Dockers® introduces us to six of them in a series of videos, Men of Style.

Like you, our hearts and thoughts are with the millions of people across the Carribean, United States and Canada whose lives have been affected by Hurricane Sandy. To assist with the disaster relief efforts, the Levi Strauss Foundation has committed a total of $100,000 to the American Red Cross and grassroots organizations in affected areas. In addition, the foundation is double-matching our employees donations to disaster relief.

As a Dockers® menswear designer, it makes sense to me to see how our clothes respond to the real world – even if that world includes a skateboard and some tricks. So I convinced a few friends to join me in putting the Dockers® Alpha Khaki to the test on the streets of San Francisco. The Alpha is a hybrid-sort of design, coupling the best elements of jeans with the more refined characteristics of khaki. What you end up with is a jean’s durability, rugged construction and slim fit – with the slightly more polished effect of a khaki.

A farm may not seem the most likely place to schmooze fashion editors. Unless, of course, it’s located in a fashion mecca like New York City. But where? On a high-rise roof, of course. That’s where you’ll find the Brooklyn Grange, a commercial organic farm that’s actually on the top of a Big Apple building.

When it comes to fashion design, a lot of people’s opinions about the industry are shaped by popular culture and the media – what they see on shows like Project Runway or the snarky comments made about celebrities’ red carpet choices.Sure, that can be fun stuff, but it’s a cheap kind of fun – sort of like a sugar high – with little redeeming social value. And it detracts from what fashion design can be, at its best: a merger of art, innovation, technology, science and sustainability.

Given its San Francisco roots, it’s no surprise that the Dockers® brand should harken back to its West Coast origins for inspiration. That’s certainly the case with the brand’s new Art of Khaki collection. If the mod check shirting looks familiar, it’s likely because you’ve seen an image of Jack Kerouac or Lawrence Ferlinghetti or one of their Beat Generation contemporaries wearing one. (We own no rights, so you’ll have to Google it yourself.)
