Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&CO.), one of the leading apparel companies in the world, is recruiting for the position of Assistant General Counsel (“AGC”) in the People’s Republic of China. The successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to support an important and growing market for LS&CO. The AGC will serve as legal advisor to LS&CO.’s business in China and will be a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT) based in Shanghai.  A key partner to the SMT, s/he will help drive business goals while managing legal and compliance risks.

The AGC will provide both strategic and tactical legal advice on a broad range of laws including general commercial law, franchise law, product safety, product quality and related laws and labor laws.  S/he is expected to be “one step ahead” and anticipate legal developments in China, advising on their potential impact on business strategies.

The AGC will also provide counsel on relevant LS&CO. policies (e.g., the Worldwide Code of Business Conduct, Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption (ABAC) Policy and Contract Policy).  From time to time, s/he may be asked to support LS&CO.’s Brand Protection Program which is led by LS&CO’s Chief IP Counsel in San Francisco.  These activities will require close collaboration with colleagues based in San Francisco and Singapore.

Given its significant sourcing activities in China, the AGC may be required to give legal support to LS&CO.’s Global Supply Chain.  The AGC may also be called upon to support LS&CO’s government affairs strategy under the direction of the government affairs team based in San Francisco.

 On a day-to-day basis, the AGC’s responsibilities will include:

  •  Providing legal advice to management on sales and marketing strategies and on relationship issues with business partners (e.g. contentious disputes; exit strategies).
  • Conducting legal and compliance trainings on relevant laws and company policies (e.g., anti-bribery; contracts policy) and providing counsel on compliance matters in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Division (APD) Regional General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer.
  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating various contracts such as franchise agreements, lease agreements, distribution agreements and marketing agreements.
  • Defining and implementing litigation strategies in collaboration with outside counsel and the APD Regional General Counsel.
  • Monitoring legal developments in China and advising on their potential business impact.
  • Supervising outside counsel.

Requirements:

  • At least 8 years’ experience in an international law firm in China and/or abroad; in-house experience in an international company in China desirable but not required.
  • Graduate of reputable law school; if graduate of a law school in China, foreign LL.M. degree desirable but not required.
  • Admitted to practice law in PRC or, if admitted in another jurisdiction, has worked extensively in China and is familiar with the Chinese legal system and legal issues.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Mandarin.
  • Experience in apparel or retail industry desirable but not required.
