A Levi’s® customer or employee in South Africa is about 10 times more likely to be infected by HIV than their counterparts in most parts of Asia, Europe and the Americas.
That’s a sobering fact.
And it’s one of the reasons Levi Strauss South Africa worked with us at Matchboxology to launch Red for Life, a highly influential – sometimes controversial – communications campaign to drive HIV awareness. And save lives.
Red for Life featured celebrities, musical artists and Levi’s®-branded condoms. As the pictures below illustrate, the campaign continues to make an impact, even five years after its launch.
Why?

I am writing to you to convey my feelings towards your 514™ X Slim Straight jean. If finances allow it to be so I will never purchase another piece of denim.

Innovation may not be the first word that comes to mind when you think about Levi Strauss & Co., but it’s as much as part of us as cotton and zippers.
After all, it takes a lot of innovation for the company that invented blue jeans to remain a global apparel leader more than a century later – known for not only what we make, but also how we make it.

The folks at the Levi’s® brand are, understandably, well known for the amazing product in their stores. Makes sense, right?
And as they expand in the retail world, they’re also becoming known for the stores themselves.
If you’ve had the chance to visit the brand’s flagship in London, you know what I’m talking about. It, too, is amazing. And now, an award winner. Make that awards!

It’s fun to partner with someone…fun. And funny. Like Ellen Degeneres.
If you saw her talk show yesterday, you probably noticed that Levi’s® Curve ID jeans received plenty of attention. She started the show off in typical fashion – dancing. And wearing her favorite pair of Levi’s® jeans.
And what did she have to say?

Kids are the coolest.
As today’s proof, we’ve got some totally cool, kid-created trading cards sent to us from Mrs. Adam’s second grade class at John Adams Elementary in Torrance, California.
On the front of each trading card: Our founder, Levi Strauss!

I confess: When I go to the grocery store, I sometimes forget my canvas bags. When the clerk asks the inevitable question, “Paper or plastic?” I’m stuck – asking myself, which one is better?
These days it seems like everyone’s trying to make greener, more environmentally conscious choices.

No matter where in the world I travel – and I do my share – if I pick up a bottle of Coca-Cola, I know what I’m getting. It’s the same when I spot that familiar bottle of Absolut in a local market. There’s no mystery about what’s inside.
I don’t typically mix Coke and Absolut, but in this case I will. These are two brands that are globally known, highly respected, and unfailingly consistent. And they’ve each reached this pinnacle by a relentless focus on the customer.

Steven Alan’s approach to khaki design? “Eliminating the doofy-ness.”
At least, that’s what he told the New York Times.
I think he did it.
