We Get Letters: From a Brooklyn Artist

Randy Wray is an artist and a fan of Levi’s® jeans. He merges the two in his Brooklyn home, creating works of art from recycled denim and so much more.

Randy recently shared some pictures of his works, as well as some words describing what he does. We thought you might like to see them. His work reminds us of a recent recycled denim case study we developed in partnership with the San Francisco Art Institute.

GoodGuide, You and Your Clothes

So, just how much do you know about those jeans you’re wearing? Or that t-shirt? Where were they made? And how?

Levi Strauss Foundation: Why We Do What We Do

Within the first year of opening his dry goods company in San Francisco, Levi Strauss made a financial contribution to a local orphanage. It was 1854, nearly a decade since he had left a dicey economy and religious persecution in Germany.

In 1897, not long after Levi Strauss & Co. began manufacturing denim overalls, he funded scholarships at the University of California in Berkeley. Half of these were for women, at a time when they were largely excluded from higher education.

'Take Those Off So You Can Have More Kids'

By now, you’ve no doubt heard of Levi’s® new Ex-Girlfriend jeans. They’ve generated a lot of attention, including our back-story post earlier this week.

Fish: "I Liked the Jeans Better From a Distance."

Tell me this isn’t a great picture. Seriously. A Levi’s® fan from Poland sent it our way, and we couldn’t help but share. Here’s his story, as he told it to us:

Around the World: Doing the Right Thing Matters

The competition between the two neighboring shoe factories reached the point a few years ago where the owners refused to talk to each other.

Until last month’s fire.

It was about 5 o’clock in the morning when the blaze broke out in the small Brazilian town of Picada Café. It started at the Cooper Shoes factory. If something wasn’t done quickly, both it and the Sugar Shoes factory located next door, would easily be destroyed.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Here Comes Our Judge...for GQ's Best New Menswear Designer

Although it was a short visit, last Thursday was a momentous occasion for the Dockers® brand in New York City. I’m talking about, of course, the GQ Best New Menswear Designer in America party held at the ultra-hip Ace Hotel.

I was in and out of NYC in 12 hours, but what a great 12 hours it was.

Deconstructing the Ex-Girlfriend

We were backstage at an SXSW concert in Austin -- styling an edgy rock band. As the front man looked at the choices we had, he zeroed in on a pair of girl’s floral-print skinny jeans. He was hooked.

That was the moment we both knew we had to make the Ex-Girlfriend jean.

Fighting for Change

“If my grandmother, who lived and cleaned houses in Jim Crow South, would’ve ever been told that her granddaughter would get paid to talk about freedom, she wouldn’t have believed it.”
