New Jeans. Incredible Finishes. Less Water.

Here’s how it all started. A team of us – all designers – went to one of our laundries and told the folks there that we wanted to do the most incredible denim finishing we’d ever done – but we didn’t want to use water.

If you’re into blue jeans like I am, you know that’s a tall order.

I mean, anyone can create a jean using less water. But the challenge is using innovative techniques to create the finishes customers want…without using a lot of water.

We believe we’ve done both.

Giants 4, Rangers 1, Junior Giants $10,000

We weren’t really sure what to expect when we made the gesture: Levi Strauss & Co. would donate $1,000 to the Junior Giants for every home run hit by the San Francisco Giants in their 2010 World Series match-up with the Texas Rangers.

Now we do. Seven home runs, including one by Edgar Renteria in last night’s fifth and final game of the series, makes the total $7,000.

Will Young Women Vote? Survey says…

To hear the political pundits tell it, the youth vote tomorrow may fall well short of the turnout we saw in the 2008 Presidential Election. But a new poll by the Levi’s® brand suggests otherwise.

The poll was taken of so-called millennial women, ages 18-29, between Oct. 22 and 27. And here are some of the key findings:

Uuuuribe! A Homer for the Home Team – and the Junior Giants!

We sell our products all over the world – including Texas. We even have a technology center in Westlake, not all that far from Arlington, home of one of the 2010 World Series teams, the Texas Rangers.

But we’re a San Francisco-based team, founded here 157 years ago. This is our hometown. So we hope you’ll forgive us for playing favorites when it comes to the other World Series team this year.

Go Giants!

Bullying: There’s More To Do.

It’s safe to say the bullying hasn’t stopped. But we’d like to think the recent focus on the problem is having an impact. Of course, it’s a shame that it comes only after the recent, tragic suicides of at least five young people – bullied because they were either gay or perceived “different” in some way.

Full Frontal. Graphic, Too.

Cool is subjective - in my opinion a cool T is based on brand relevance, it depends on where it comes from and where it’s going. A bad T is a design that exploits current predictable pop culture art / design trends. I think a brand should represent its own original vision.

Save It, Kids.

When’s the last time you heard a teenager talk about his small business and the people he employed. Perhaps…never?

It happened to me just recently. In fact, I listened to two teenagers talk about the difference savings and financial education had made in their lives.

One spoke of his lawn care business and his five employees. He wrote the business plan, saved for the expenses and still managed to pay for college. The other, a high school student from Connecticut, saved for three CDs – as in Certificates of Deposit.

Shape What's to Come

I don’t know about you, but I think that being a woman, or a girl or a chick or whatever you prefer to call yourself – is pretty awesome.

That’s not to say life isn’t full of challenges, but women in their twenties or “Millennials,” as the researchers like to call them, literally and figuratively have the world at their fingertips.
