Go, Katie, Go!

Just last year, at the age of 22, Katie Spotz rowed across the Atlantic Ocean. It’s time for an encore, also involving water.

Right now, Katie and her friend, Sam Williams, are in the midst of a cross-country bicycle trip. They started their 3,000-mile, non-stop race this past Saturday in Oceanside, Calif. It’s a race, because the goal is to finish, in Annapolis, Maryland, in seven days and 21 hours.

For Firefighters, a Little Help

My first thought when I heard about the wildfire now burning in Eastern Arizona was how much I wanted to help fight the blaze. Fighting a huge wildfire like the Wallow fire used to be my “day job.” Now, I work in the legal department at Levi Strauss & Co., but I still feel a strong connection to those firefighters on the front lines.

That connection is why I was heartened to hear that my company is donating 200 pairs of Levi’s® jeans and Dockers® pants to firefighters as part of a larger product donation to wildfire victims.

A Look Back...and Ahead

I’m a lucky guy.

When I joined the Levi’s® brand back in 1979, I had no idea of the adventure ahead. I started as a product manager in my native Australia, and I write now as the president and CEO of Levi Strauss & Co.

It’s been quite a ride, one on which I look back with tremendous pride.

Bicycles Built for 50

I cried at work last week, and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

A bit of background. One of my responsibilities here at Levi’s® is to help put together the annual sales conference for our retail managers from across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The conference is a big deal, and it requires months of planning. The ultimate goal is to send our managers off feeling energized, so they can then motivate their teams and better connect with our consumers.

Targeting HIV/AIDS...With Targets

In business, you know you’re successful by setting – and, then, meeting or beating – targets. That holds for ending AIDS as well.

At the United Nations High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS last week, heads of state, ministers of health, and leaders in HIV/AIDS set some aggressive targets as well – declaring that halting HIV/AIDS requires clear goals.

Haiti and Levi Strauss & Co.

The Nation magazine has published a story outlining a series of issues about the US Government’s policy related to Haiti. While many of the issues raised clearly need further dialogue, we at Levi Strauss & Co. are focused on an allegation related to one of our contract factories there.

The story alleges that one of our apparel contractors in Haiti advocated against raising the minimum wage in that country.

Changing the World, One Student at a Time

You’ve seen the headlines.

Across the United States and beyond, education cuts continue to erode programs and services in public schools. As a result, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for students of all ages to acquire the knowledge and tools necessary to confront the looming social, economic, and environmental burdens they’re likely to inherit. We face an uncertain future, and now, more than ever, applied learning is key.

What's Your Favorite Trucker?

If you’re looking for an excuse to make this a Southern California summer, here’s one: Levi’s® partnership with the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art to create and sell denim trucker jackets. The jackets, selling at MOCA, feature the work of ten artists from the museum's “Art in the Streets” exhibition.

Whether you’re a fan of Keith Haring or Revok, you’re bound to find one you like. There are only 50 of each design, and each jacket costs $250, with all of the proceeds going to MOCA.

Levi's® Takes the LEED

Step into the Levi’s® brand store in Passage du Havre in Paris, and you’ll notice it’s different.

How so?

The lighting uses less electricity, for starters. That electricity comes from a green power provider and is obtained from 100% renewable sources. The store’s high efficiency plumbing fixtures result in 30% less water use. Even the flooring is made of 100% Forest Stewardship Council certified wood.
