If you check in here -- LS&Co. Unzipped -- on a regular basis, you probably know that 2013 marks the 140th birthday of the Levi's® 501® jean. We've recently shared stories on the topic.
The actual birth date? May 20.
That's when a patent was issued to Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis for strengthening trousers with copper rivets. Perfect workwear for those involved in the tough job of building the American West.

You know what it’s like to see a picture of yourself from, say, 10 or 15 years ago and think, “What in the world was I wearing – and why?”
Never mind the hair style.
Michael Williams takes a smarter approach to what he wears. In fact, the founder of the website, A Continuous Lean, says, “I actually dress for the idea that, in 20 years, if I look at a picture of myself, I’ll say, 'all right, I look relevant, still, today.'”

July 4th is arguably the most American of United States holidays.
We call it Independence Day, marking when the country’s founders, in 1776, declared independence from Great Britain. No hard feelings, eh, friends?
In reviewing the news this week, we found a Forbes piece on “most patriotic brands” particularly intriguing.
The fact that Levi Strauss & Co. was tied for number three on the list is, no doubt, why this caught our eye. And we are clearly in good company.

As Levi Strauss & Co.’s historian, going to Germany is like going home. In my 23 years with the company, I’ve been here more than any other country. And that’s appropriate, since this is where our founder, Levi Strauss, was born.
In Berlin, my only German stop on the 501® Jean Roadshow, I had a full day of interviews and presentations at a lovely 1920s-era hotel. My audience was a collection of equally lovely journalists and bloggers, all of whom seemed to appreciate seeing the vintage jeans I brought with me.

My 12-year-old son and I were in the car this morning, driving to his basketball camp, when we heard the news. The U.S. Supreme Court had declined to rule on California’s Proposition 8, effectively allowing same-sex marriage in the state.
The decision followed one that we’d heard about earlier in the morning, striking down the federal Defense of Marriage Act and, thus, ruling that married same-sex couples are entitled to federal benefits.
“Is that good?” he asked.
I fumbled for a clear answer. And my response was somewhat muted.

My name is Paula Camp. I'm writing to you because I believe my Levi’s® 501® Shrink-to-Fit jeans saved my leg and hip from serious injury in a terrible motorcycle accident last month.
On May 11, I was riding my Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe on I-580 in the Altamont Pass, east of San Francisco. My husband was in front on his Harley-Davidson Road Glide, and we were traveling east on our way home to Stockton after a great ride to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Childhood friends Susan Claes and Julie Janssens shared a dream of starting their own business and a passion for healthy food. They set their sights on starting a soup-and-salad bar in the heart of Brussels— a new concept in the local food scene.
But as youth entrepreneurs with little formal training and no personal savings, Susan and Julie had a hard time accessing credit through traditional banks. They also knew that marketing, financial management and business planning skills would be critical to growing their business.

I am always thrilled when I get to visit London. It’s one of my favorite cities and has such a fascinating history. I see my family gene pool wandering the streets, and I always go to the National Portrait Gallery to say hello to Richard III.
There’s also a Levi Strauss & Co. connection.
