More Jeans. Less Water.

I've always believed that businesses not only have the ability to change the world -- they have a duty to do so.

It's this belief that has led me through my career. And to Levi's. To change things.

Let me give you an example.

Last year, we announced the Levi’s® Water<Less™ collection – denim finished in a way that uses significantly less water. Up to 96 percent less for some products.

Steve Jobs: In Memoriam

Steve Jobs stood on the frontier for 56 years. He was a master innovator who changed computing, music and telecommunications.

He showed us that anything is possible and, in doing so, made the world a better place.

Many words will be written in the hours and days ahead about Steve Jobs. And with good reason. He inspired so many people in so many ways that we can only marvel at his artistry and intuition.

We thank him for showing us the way and for challenging the world to stay hungry and stay foolish.

That Tab on Your, Um, Pocket? It's 75!

One of the most recognizable trademarks in the world has just turned 75. And we’re proud to say, it’s ours.

That trademark is officially known as the “Tab Device.” You might just call it “the red Tab” when you see it on someone’s, um, back pocket.

To vintage clothing collectors, graphic artists, designers and advertising executives, the Tab Device is an icon, and it’s sometimes hard to believe it hasn’t been a part of Levi’s® jeans since the beginning.

We're All In It Together.

Suppose you’re an apparel company, moving product from, say, raw cotton in the field to a finished item in a store.

It’s a long chain, with many links. And while that “supply chain” process has never been simple, the added constraint of sustainability is making it even more complex. How do you get that product from farm to store…with minimal impact on the environment?

So it makes sense that colleges – and students – are taking a closer look, in the classroom, at sustainability. And collaboration.

Kewl Khakis

None other than the Oxford English Dictionary has now said “kewl” is a real word – an alternative for “cool.”

It seems to me that we can use it to describe Dockers® Alpha Khakis, the brand’s alternative to jeans.

Kewl Dockers® Alpha Khakis.

If that’s not enough to drive home the fact that these are not your father’s Dockers, nor your boss’ chinos, the brand’s Europe team is now showcasing them in a Web-based film series, the “Alpha Generation.”

A Levi's® Fan

I have been wearing Levi's® 501® jeans for over 35 years and have about 20 years of Levi Jeans hanging in my closet.

They are tattered and shredded in the knees and thighs because I wore them in the photo studio and in the dark room to develop the pictures I take as a professional photographer and with hands always wet I dried them on my pants, closest thing to a towel.

Facts vs. A Good Story

There are few things in life better than a good story – whether on the printed page, in a movie or told by a friend. And in most cases, the phrase, “don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story,” makes me smile.

But when a story runs roughshod over the truth and hurts something I care about, I’ll be the first to speak up. That’s what’s happening now, in some circles – and the target is the Levi’s® brand, which I lead.

APEC's Global Leaders of Change

Our company’s hometown – San Francisco – just hosted one of its largest diplomatic gatherings since the signing of the United Nations charter more than 65 years ago.

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation – known as APEC – brought together nearly 3,000 delegates from 21 countries bordering the Pacific Ocean to promote trade and economic cooperation in the region. As part of the forum, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton convened leaders in government and business for the APEC Women and the Economy Summit.

Back (Then) in the U.S.S.R.

Russia – part of the former Soviet Union – is a fairly new market for Levi’s® jeans, but the company and the brand actually visited that country more than fifty years ago.

Driving Social Innovation...to End HIV/AIDS

People exposed to or living with HIV/AIDS often don’t receive the care or support they need - particularly if they are low-income, live in more rural settings, or live on the margins of society.

We need to change that.

Fortunately, for the first time since the onset of the AIDS epidemic, the United States has a national HIV/AIDS strategy in place. And increasing access to health care for those who don’t have it is one of the strategy’s urgent goals.
