Around 100 million people in the European Union spend time volunteering every year. If they were a country, they would be the biggest Member State of the European Union.
These volunteers make a positive difference in the lives of millions of people across the continent — they are justifiably described as the 'glue' that holds society together. Wherever people work together to help each other and support those in need, society as a whole benefits, and the volunteers themselves also benefit.
Whether they're helping to preserve our environment, campaigning for human rights or helping ensure that everyone enjoys a decent life, volunteers are our day-to-day heroes.
2011 is the European Year of Volunteering. It gives much-needed visibility to the vital work done by such volunteers and the organisations that work with them – including companies such as Levi Strauss & Co.
The Year offers opportunities to help volunteers do their job better and get recognition for their tireless work. The timing of the year is no coincidence: there is also an international focus on volunteering in 2011, as the United Nations celebrates the 10th anniversary of their International Year of the Volunteer 2001.
It gives me great pleasure to see so many initiatives by grassroots volunteers, companies and volunteering organisations during the European Year, across Europe and beyond. Levi Strauss & Co.'s Community Day is one such example, which I had the opportunity to be part of this morning. The company's 150-year legacy of giving back to help those in need – both in Europe and communities around the globe – is an inspiration for other companies.
The EU is committed to ensuring a long-term follow-up to the 2011 European Year of Volunteering: this is not just a "one-off ". We are using this year as a platform for broadening and deepening the outreach, content and quality of volunteering, to leave a lasting, meaningful legacy worthy of the commitment of Europe's amazing volunteers!
