As one men’s fashion magazine editor put it, few sartorial areas are as tricky as pants. The choice between pleated and flat-front pants is easily one of the most problematic decisions for a lot of guys, not least because there are no clear rules.
The big question is, Which style should you really go for?
Well, like the music on your playlists, the choice is yours.
It all boils down to individual taste and personal style. However, before you fully make up your mind, there is something to consider.
Pleats are back on trend!
Pleated pants were once the more traditional and conservative choice. A whole generation of guys grew up with everyone from his father to the local funeral director sporting pleated pants.
Get the picture?
Well, that was then. And this is now.
Pleats are no longer outdated; high school biology teacher chic is unbelievably cool.
Traditional styles have gone aggressive – think bold plaid shirts, sock suspenders and braces – fashion has come full circle.
Dockers®has taken this modern revival and added its own unique twist, extending its portfolio from last season to offer both a slim fit and a straight fit pleated pant (a looser classic or comfort fit completes the picture). Gone are the extended waistband and the voluminous Harem-style look made famous by Crockett & Tubbs of “Miami Vice” fame. In its place is a more tailored and stylish silhouette.
My Dockers® design team colleague, Trine Rosenkjaer, tells me there are no rules to deciding which fit to choose, but there are a couple of factors to help tip the balance: Your build, for example.
Trine says that guys with heavier or more athletic builds – think cyclists – will find the Dockers®D-2 pleated pant the better option, whereas if you are looking for an edgier approach, customize a Dockers® D-1 fit by wearing them low and rolling up the bottoms. To complete the look, add a pair of dock shoes.
Trine also recommends keeping your pants as slim and trim as possible. The less you have hanging on you, the better.
Before buying, always look at yourself in the mirror and check out your butt – everyone else will – and trust what you see. Contrary to belief, a slimmer silhouette often flatters body shape better than something voluminous.
In other words, even with pleats, you can keep it trim – and save the volume for your tunes.
