To hear the political pundits tell it, the youth vote tomorrow may fall well short of the turnout we saw in the 2008 Presidential Election. But a new poll by the Levi’s® brand suggests otherwise.
The poll was taken of so-called millennial women, ages 18-29, between Oct. 22 and 27. And here are some of the key findings:
Contrary to those news reports, three in four of millennial women are registered and plan to vote in this year’s election. In fact, more than one-third of women surveyed were more excited about voting than getting their learner’s driving permit.
84 percent say their vote is likely to make a difference, and nearly half share their political opinions with friends, family and colleagues on social networking sites.
Nearly nine out of ten millennial women look to sources other than their own families for political information. And nearly three in four feel informed enough to make the right decision.
So…why would the Levi’s® brand commission such a poll? It was done in conjunction with www.ShapeWhatsToCome.com, a new global online community and discussion platform where young women share ideas and opinions and connect with peers on hot topics. And yes, those topics include politics!
Regardless of your political leanings, it should be good news that young women are engaged in the political process and excited about actively participating on election day.
We can only hope that regardless of whether their candidates win or lose, they remain enthusiastic beyond tomorrow and let their voices be a regular part of the political dialogue.
And, of course, we should join them – tomorrow and beyond.
