Today, New York will observe – and recognize – its first legal, same-sex marriages.
The ceremonies follow last month’s action by New York lawmakers to approve marriage equality -- an action that we, as a company, applaud.
Why do we care? For us, it’s all about equality.
Throughout our history, Levi Strauss & Co has been engaged in the battle for equal rights – on many fronts: racial, gender, sexual and economic. In the 1940s, decades before the law required, we integrated our sewing plants. In 1992, we were the first Fortune 500 company to provide domestic partnership health benefits.
Our efforts to promote equality extend well beyond our own workplaces. We aim to influence how people around the world perceive and treat others, and we do so using our public policy, our work in the community, and our advertising.
In fact, you’ll find one of our ads in the New York Times today. And I believe the message is worth sharing here:
Home of the Brave
Bravery stems from a sense of duty to stand up for what is right and fair for all people. As a company long dedicated to the support of civil rights, Levi Strauss & Co. wishes to humbly commend the citizens and leaders of the great state of New York for signing the Marriage Equality Act into law. And yet, there is more work to be done. Forty-four states still have not recognized the inalienable right to legally marry the person you love regardless of sexual orientation. As we take this moment to congratulate New York, we also challenge the rest of the country to continue the course of social justice and remember what it truly means to be the home of the brave.
On this historic day in the Empire State, consider the ad our wedding announcement – our stand on the important issue of marriage equality.

People can choose to live and be with whomever they want. But do not rewrite the definition that is in every dictionary: marriage (marij) n. 1.The legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife. A dear friend died of AIDS in Long Island. None of us were denied visiting him in the hospital. Man and woman. There is a reason, a purpose, dare I say, a sacredness to that union--without it, civilization dies.
