This Thursday is World Water Day. And we’re trying something interesting in our offices and stores around the world.
Starting today, for five days, employees and store associates will be asked – not required – to wear the same pair of jeans or khakis every day.
In the picture above, that’s a sponge, securely attached to someone’s jeans. If they wash them, the sponge expands – and everyone will know!
The whole idea here is to let folks know that you don’t always have to wash your jeans after every wear. It’s often okay to do some spot cleaning and put them on again! (This assumes it’s not 110-degrees Fahrenheit outside and you’re sweating like, uh, something that sweats a lot.)
So … why?

It’s about conservation and sustainability. Washing less means using less water and energy. And this goes back to something we’ve been talking about for a while here – Care Tag for Our Planet.
The message is simple. We did a scientific assessment of a pair of Levi’s® 501® jeans and Dockers® Original Khakis. And we found that some of the largest environmental impact happens in caring for your product after purchase.
You can reduce the full lifecycle climate change impact of your jeans by up to 50 percent by washing your clothes less, washing in cold water and line drying. Donating them after you’re finished with them can also help.
We’ll let you know how it goes this week. My chosen pair of pants is a rigid pair of shrink-to-fit 501s® which means it wasn’t washed when it was made. I won’t wash them this week and, in the future, I will wash them as little as possible. I want the natural wear patterns and patina to develop -- I have another pair that is 4-years old and they are starting to look amazing.
You can join us. Just upload a picture of yourself in the same jeans each day this week and use the hashtag #gowaterless on Instagram.

been doing this practice since college days. i don't wear and wash my jeans. in fact, i only do it when i could no longer stand the smell or the appearance. i love my jeans so much that i preserved them by not exposing them to water and detergents.
