Randy Wray is an artist and a fan of Levi’s® jeans. He merges the two in his Brooklyn home, creating works of art from recycled denim and so much more.
Randy recently shared some pictures of his works, as well as some words describing what he does. We thought you might like to see them. His work reminds us of a recent recycled denim case study we developed in partnership with the San Francisco Art Institute.
I'm an artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. I've been wearing Levi's for as long as I can remember, and for the past few years, I've been using my old jeans in my art.
I make sculptures, paintings, and collages that address themes of transformation and redemption. My art is made from recycled denim, shredded junk mail, and discarded furniture collected from the streets. I combine these materials to make abstract forms that are suggestive of ships, wagons, trains and other vehicles. These depictions of transportation take on the idea of movement as metaphor for spiritual transformation.
I aim to perform a kind of alchemy, transforming lowly materials and forgotten images into new objects that hum with a material sense of the divine. I strive for a sublime quality while still fully embracing the absurd limitations of the human condition.
