Given media coverage of Gulf of Mexico oil spill, it’s not surprising that many U.S. residents have missed news reports about severe flooding in Europe.
Residents of Poland and other countries have not. They’re living through it.
In Poland alone, at least 15 people are dead as a result of flooding, and thousands have been evacuated, some leaving behind homes under water.
Rescue teams have arrived from other countries, along with water pumps and diesel generators.
And then there are the Poles themselves, including Levi Strauss & Co. employees, doing their part. In this case, filling and placing sandbags to try to hold the water back. Among them, the plant manager and his team from our own factory in Plock. It’s hard work. But it’s just what we’ve come to expect from our teams around the world.
Every year, our employees around the world participate in Community Day, leaving their regular jobs behind to contribute to the communities where they live and work. Here, that really hit home, as the day, scheduled months ago, happened to coincide with disaster.
As we send our Polish colleagues our support, it’s much more than our best wishes. As head of the Red Tab Foundation, I can vouch for that.
The Red Tab Foundation is a public, nonprofit foundation, which assists our employees, retirees and their families who face problems caused by unexpected emergencies. Like flooding.
In this case... those employees in Poland and other European countries affected by flooding who find themselves homeless, unable to work, or – worse yet – injured as a result of this disaster can turn to Red Tab for financial assistance, even as employees elsewhere contribute to the foundation for today’s needs, and tomorrow’s.
As employees volunteer to help their communities in the midst of natural disaster, we are working to help our employees.
It’s part of who we are as a company and our philosophy of profits with principles. It’s part of what makes Levi Strauss & Co. a great place to work.
