Targeting HIV/AIDS...With Targets

In business, you know you’re successful by setting – and, then, meeting or beating – targets. That holds for ending AIDS as well.

At the United Nations High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS last week, heads of state, ministers of health, and leaders in HIV/AIDS set some aggressive targets as well – declaring that halting HIV/AIDS requires clear goals.

Leaders declared that by 2015, no child will be born with HIV, the spread of HIV will be cut in half, and the number of people on lifesaving antiretroviral treatment will be ramped up to 15 million people in developing countries.

We applaud world leaders for this new global commitment to turn the tide of HIV/AIDS. These goals may seem aggressive, even aspirational, but meeting them is critical. And making it happen requires that the business community stay vigilant in their HIV/AIDS effort. This includes leveraging partnerships with nongovernmental organizations and governments to end stigma and improve access to HIV/AIDS education and services.

So as world leaders convened, Levi Strauss & Co. was involved. In fact, we were one of the few global companies officially invited to deliver remarks on business leadership at the U.N. Civil Society Hearings in April.

We also highlighted innovations with workforce HIV/AIDS efforts that address gender and virtual learning. Click here to view our HIV/AIDS workforce animation – a breakthrough effort recognized by the U.N. as a “best practice” in highlighting women in the workforce affected by HIV/AIDS.

Levi Strauss & Co.’s commitment to ending HIV/AIDS is nearly as old as the virus itself. Decades of experience taught us that reaching targets requires commitment, business leadership, innovation, and collective accountability. Our own effort aligns with the targets set by the U.N. in three key areas:

• Improving access to HIV/AIDS services for our employees
• Sharpening our focus on women’s empowerment
• Driving impact through our supply chain by aligning with the U.N.’s Millennium Development Goals

We’re proud of the work we’ve done to date. And we encourage the business community to stay the course and remain focused on ending HIV/AIDS.  We cannot afford to miss these targets. Too many in need are counting on us.
