We’re no stranger to speaking up when it comes to our values at Levi Strauss & Co.
Apropos of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, our CEO Chip Bergh and CEO Kenneth Cole opined in the Huffington Post about HIV travel bans.
You see, more than 30 million people could be denied entry, detained or deported from 45 countries simply because they live with HIV.
These restrictions exist even though the HIV virus cannot be spread through casual contact.
Most HIV-related travel restrictions were imposed by governments in the 1980s, when fear surrounded HIV transmission. Since then, we’ve seen that such measures don’t protect public health. They’re simply unfair. And they’re bad for business.
In today's globalized economy and competitive landscape, work-related travel and relocation are essential for businesses to succeed. Companies have to be able to send employees and executives overseas, regardless of their HIV status.
That’s why we’re proud that we took a stand last July as the first company to sign the CEO Pledge calling on these countries to lift travel restrictions for people living with HIV. Since that time, the Pledge has grown to include more than 40 CEOs from some of the world's largest companies.
Signing the CEO Pledge is just one way we’re doing our part in leading the fight against HIV/AIDS in the corporate sector and beyond. It’s an issue we’re firmly committed to – and it’s been a priority for Levi Strauss & Co. for the past thirty years.
