Spokes People

Let’s face it. There are people who like bicycles. And there are people who love them.

The folks at Oregon Manifest fall into the latter category. They live, breathe, eat, and otherwise support bicycling.

In fact, they say their organization exists to “celebrate and amplify bike craft, design and innovation.”

I’d say that’s true love.

And it’s that kind of emotional attachment that made it easy for us bicycling aficionados within the Levi’s® brand to partner with Oregon Manifest for their Constructor’s Design Challenge – a design/build competition to create the ultimate modern utility bike.

You see, the Levi’s® brand is all about craft, design and innovation. It’s why I work here. We not only invented the blue jean back in 1873, we’re always looking to advance it.

Take, for instance, our Commuter series, a new line designed and built for the needs of the urban commuter cyclist. It has such features as a utility waistband that holds a U-lock, antimicrobial protection against odor, and fabric that water-resistant and dirt-repellant.

Okay, back to Oregon Manifest and their challenge.

OM board member Shannon Holt says the goal of the contest is a bike designed as an integrated tool for living that is yet to be found on the retail floor. That’s quite a challenge – one that’s been taken up by 31 builders and another six student teams.

The bikes will be unveiled on Sept. 23, with a field test on the 24th. And winners will be announced that evening.

Have a look at this great video produced by Oregon Manifest, summing up the Design Challenge. I think you'll be as excited as we are about the competition.
