As a woman, I have to admit I was more than a little inspired by Friday's news that the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to three … women.
They are Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, peace activist Leymah Gbowee, also of Liberia, and Tawakkol Karman, a pro-democracy campaigner in Yemen.
All three are seen as fearless pioneers for their work as nonviolent activists – promoting peace, democracy and gender equality. At Levi Strauss & Co., we have a respect for pioneers and the roles they play in making history.
As you might expect, most Peace Prize recipients in the award’s 110-year history have been men. The head of the Nobel committee described today’s prize announcement as “a very important signal to women all over the world.”
It’s worth noting that Sirleaf was also a pioneer in another way. She is the first woman to be elected president in modern Africa. I agree with Archbishop Desmond Tutu who said that she deserved to win the award "many times over."
This Nobel announcement will, no doubt, be an inspiration to women around the world. And, I think, to more than a few men.
