If you pass by the Levi’s® store in New York’s Meatpacking District (pictured above) or Soho neighborhood, you might see something that catches your eye. I’m not talking about our amazing Water<Less™ or Curve ID jeans, but window displays that support a fight for equality. In this case, marriage equality.
Now that the State of New York has made same-sex marriage legal, the windows take on new significance, particularly at this time of the year. June is when people across the U.S. and around the world celebrate gay rights.
As a gay man, I’m proud that Levi Strauss & Co. takes a leadership position on such important social issues. It’s one of the reasons I work here.
But I’m not surprised.
The company has long fought for equal rights on many fronts: racial, gender, sexual and economic. And our efforts to bring about equality for all extend well beyond our own workplaces, where we treasure the diverse backgrounds and talents of our employees.
Generations have worn Levi’s® jeans, turning them into a symbol of freedom and self-expression in the face of adversity, challenge and social change. Our customers forged a new territory called the American West. They fought in wars for peace. They instigated counterculture revolutions. They tore down the Berlin Wall. Reverent, irreverent — they took a stand.
Like our founder Levi Strauss, we’re a company that believes we’re here for something bigger than ourselves. Our corporate values -- Empathy, Originality, Integrity and Courage -- are the foundation of our company and define who we are.
So as we at Levi Strauss & Co. pause to note progress this weekend, we also remain committed to the work ahead -- on so many fronts. And we’re proud, particularly because so many of our consumers are joining us.
