As we all watch what’s happening in London and other UK cities, it’s somewhat hard to see glimmers of hope in the violence, death and destruction.
But if you look closely, you’ll see it. And it’s not in the riots and mayhem. Far from it.
It’s in the citizens taking matters – and brooms – into their own hands to clean up what they can. It’s in the fact that the @riotcleanup account on Twitter has almost 90,000 followers as of this writing – followers interested in finding out exactly where they can help.
It’s also in the Facebook page, London Cleanup. With its more than 19,000 “likes,” the page is another way to find out who needs help, and where.
In the Levi’s® brand’s new video, Legacy, the images are stirring and dramatic. But the words of the video, from the late writer Charles Bukowski, are what ring most true to me. One line in particular: be on the watch, the gods will offer you chances.
In the UK right now, I think it’s the people with the brooms, the shovels and the optimism who are taking the gods up on their offer. They’re exercising the true pioneering spirit that we at the Levi’s® brand embrace – one of optimism and rebuilding. It’s a positive message – one the world needs more of.
