“For a short time, the most interesting place in the [USA] will be a moving target.”
- Doug Aitken, artist
The moving target? A train, departing New York City in early September and making nine other stops along the way as it travels from East Coast to West by month’s end.
And what makes it “the most interesting place”?
It is, as described by The New York Times, a kind of rolling public art project. It's called Station to Station: A Nomadic Happening.
Doug Aitken is the artistic brains behind the project – and a kinetic sculpture that's part of the train. That's his rendering, pictured above, and his map, below.
Made possible by the Levi’s® brand, Station to Station will raise funds through ticket sales and donations to support non-traditional programming at seven partner museums around the country.
Aitken describes the project as "a fast moving cultural journey, a constant search over the new horizons of our changing culture."

At each stop, Station to Station will curate leading figures from the art, music, culinary, literary, and film worlds for a series of cultural interventions and site-specific happenings. The train will act as a cultural studio — globally broadcasting unique content and experiences from the stops as well as on the moving train.
Learn more here. The video below illustrates some of what you might find on the train or at one of its stops.
All aboard!
