California’s economic future is one of green jobs and clean energy. That’s why the recent efforts to repeal or delay AB 32, California’s landmark and clean energy law, would have been an economic and environmental policy disaster.
I firmly believe, if successful, those efforts would have cost thousands of jobs in the Bay Area alone, derailed California’s leadership in developing solar, wind, and other clean energy, and resulted in tons of polluted air in San Francisco and throughout our State.
Today, I joined Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Steyer, Co-Managing Partner of Farallon Capital Management for an important announcement – about a commitment of $250,000 to create and fund a public and private collaboration providing hands-on green jobs training.
The collaboration involves statewide utilities, University of California schools, the community college system, and electrical workers and contractors. And this new partnership and funding aims to create more than 2,500 green jobs in California.
My personal thanks go to Tom Steyer for his leadership in defending AB 32 and protecting the strides that we have made in our environmental stewardship and creating jobs. I also want to thank Levi Strauss & Co. for the company’s support of AB 32.
Tom deserves our thanks, too, for committing the funds to create an energy efficiency sales training program and putting people back to work.
Today’s event fittingly took place at Levi Strauss & Co.’s global headquarters, where significant energy efficiency building retrofits were a result of green jobs training. The building will soon have LEED certification for green building practices.
Levi Strauss & Co. has worked to integrate sustainability into everything they do. The renovation of their global headquarters includes energy efficient lighting and using recycled denim as insulation. By the end of 2011, Levi Strauss & Co. will be on track to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in all their owned and operated locations by 11% worldwide compared with 2007 levels.
This is a key example of San Francisco businesses joining the City in taking the lead in efforts to address global climate change.
As the Mayor, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together with great companies like Levi’s to green our economy. As your next Lieutenant Governor, I know we will remain focused on further reducing our reliance on foreign oil, develop clean energy resources, and growing our green economy...together.
