Anyone in the neighborhood of Levi’s Plaza yesterday might have sensed a certain buzz in the air.
It could’ve been the beautiful spring-like weather after so much winter rain. Or it could’ve been the fact that it was the opening day of baseball season.
More likely, though, folks at Levi Strauss & Co. headquarters were buzzing as a result of a special visitor: The San Francisco Giants’ World Series Trophy.
“I’ve been a Giants fan since before I was born,” is how one employee fan described his relationship to the team. As a native San Franciscan, it made perfect sense to him – and about 550 others – to stand in life for a photo opportunity with the trophy.
The visit recognized the special relationship Levi Strauss & Co. has with the Giants, both of which call San Francisco home. You need only pay a visit to AT&T Park, the Giants home stadium, to see “Levi’s Landing.” That’s the right-field section of the stadium – a focal point because home runs that clear the park there end up in San Francisco Bay.
Levi's® has been a corporate sponsor of the Giants for six years. And the Levi Strauss Foundation is a founder of Juma Ventures, a youth development program that provides young people concessions jobs at AT&T Park and other sports venues.
A few facts about the trophy: Each year, Tiffany makes the trophy and the Commissioner of Baseball presents it to the championship team. It weighs about 20 pounds, stands 24 inches high, and features 30 pennants, representing the teams in the American and National Baseball Leagues.
The stop at Levi Strauss headquarters is one of the last on a tour that took the trophy through much of Central and Northern California, Southern Oregon, Western Nevada, Scottsdale, Ariz. (the Giants’ spring training home), and New York.
Oh, and the Giants lost to the Dodgers in last night's opener. But that's just the first game of a long season.
Go Giants!
