I pledge allegiance to…

I pledge allegiance to…

If you buy a pair of jeans at a Levi’s® retail store today, Saturday, May 1, you’ll be asked to sign a pledge. In doing so, you’ll agree to a few simple actions:

- Washing your jeans in cold water
- Line drying them
- And, years from now, recycling them through Goodwill

In return, you’ll receive 10% off the price of those jeans. Not a huge discount, but that’s not the point.

The point is … the pledge. It’s for more than just saving a few bucks. It’s to help the planet — by using less energy and water.

At Levi Strauss & Co., we’re taking steps to reduce the environmental impact of our corporate footprint and our products. But our research shows there’s a big environmental impact that happens after you take your clothes home.

Our study of a pair of jeans showed that if you change how you wash them — from warm water to cold — and how you dry them — from machine dry to line — you can reduce the climate-change impact of caring for them by more than 50 percent!

We don’t ask customers to sign a pledge every day. Today, though, is May 1. And 5/01 reminds us of the original, definitive Levi’s® 501® jean. To mark the date, we came up with our simple pledge … to the planet. Tell us what you think — in the comments.

Hi, I have always loved Levi's... first, they were 501s.... and then roomier model numbers followed! But I wanted to say that I'm really impressed with your company, this blog and website. Great stuff. I'm in a Masters program in Communication Management at USC and my project group has chosen Levi Strauss & Co. as a company to focus a final project regarding strategic communications. After lots of research (online, surveys and interviews), we'll be writing an academic paper, publishing a slide presentation using VoiceThread and/or producing a video on our findings. I'm really excited to work on this, especially delving into your Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability and Investor Relations components. I hope we can live up to the standards of the company! Anyway, I'll be back on this site living and breathing Levi Strauss & Co. for 8 more weeks!

Editor's note: Hi Al, and thanks for your kind comment. Good luck with your final project -- and on your Masters degree. Impressive! Hope you find all the information you need on our website. (And if you find any typos, please let me know!) Thanks again!

Like many others, I am very disappointed in realizing that jeans without any stretch fibers can not be found w/Levi. Why were the 'all' cotten jeans discontinued is what I would like to know. Not everyone likes wearing 'stretch' jeans. It is very frustrating not being able to find jeans today without a stretch fiber in them. Please bring back your regular/ordinary Levi Jeans that I was accustomed to finding on the shelf. Thank you!
