If you “wear the pants,” you have to go beyond being a rough-and-tumble kind of guy. It’s not just about defending your honor or, for that matter, mowing the lawn. You also have to know when to show your softer, more chivalrous side.
That was the idea behind the “10,000 Acts of Chivalry,” held yesterday in New York and San Francisco. Why yesterday? Well, it was Mother’s Day, of course.
Dressed in Dockers®, 100 men in each city set out to perform 25 acts of chivalry per hour for four hours. You may have seen them in New York’s Times Square or outside a Broadway theater matinee. Or maybe you crossed paths at San Francisco’s Ferry Building or Union Square.
If you missed it, check out the pictures at www.facebook.com/dockers And there’s the Twitter feed: #chivalryisnotdead
According to the Dockers folks, chivalrous acts include opening doors, helping to carry luggage, hailing taxis and offering directions. (Apparently, men know how to give directions even if they don’t know how to ask for them.)
Now, as a guy, I happen to think these “acts of chivalry” are things we should be doing every day – not just Mother’s Day. That said, there have been times when women have not appreciated my offering a seat on the train or holding open a door.
Still, as a guy, I have to be prepared for such a response to an act of chivalry and able to withstand the resistance without being offended. That’s part of, um, wearing the pants. What do you think? Let ‘er rip – in the comments.

I applaud you for your work! Although I think this should be done by men everyday :) Thank you Levi's for showing and reminding everyone we Americans are courteous.
