Who knew that old jeans could take on a new life as recycled denim insulation?
Yesterday, we officially opened our new Garden Learning Center at the Edgewood Center for Children and Families – complete with recycled denim insulation made possible by a generous grant from the Levi Strauss & Co. Denim Insulation Fund.
The Garden Learning Center offers the 5,000 children and families at Edgewood a safe, beautiful green space that offers a calm setting for reflection, hands-on learning and celebrations. Edgewood provides a safety net and the highest quality care for the San Francisco Bay Area’s most vulnerable children and families
The garden will also help us teach kids about the value of nutrition. Many of our children don’t have access to healthy eating options, since fast food restaurants are more common in their neighborhoods than fresh produce. We’ll also funnel their energy into fun and constructive garden projects.
This collaboration is an innovative approach to strengthening our community, and we’re including other innovations – like recycled denim insulation and even Levi’s® jeans – to get us there.
We’ve been working with Levi Strauss & Co. since Levi Strauss made his first donation to Edgewood in the 1850’s. That’s more than 150 years of a sustainable community partnership.
With careful tending, a little sunshine and a lot of love, our new Garden Learning Center will help our community thrive. Thanks, Levi Strauss & Co.!
