Honoring Today's Pioneers in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS

This year, we’ve been commemorating the 30th anniversary of our fight against HIV/AIDS.  Last night, at a Levi’s® store in New York, we honored three organizations with our most celebrated nonprofit recognition, the Levi Strauss & Co. Pioneer Award.

By honoring today’s pioneers in nonprofit organizations around the world, we recognize the hard work and pioneering efforts of individuals and organizations. Our hope is that calling attention to the work of today’s pioneers will inspire others to join their march forward so that we end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in our lifetime.

The three inspirational organizations we recognized are:

New York-based nonprofit God’s Love We Deliver, an organization that has shown enduring care for those affected by HIV/AIDS since the very beginning of the crisis. By providing nutritious, individually tailored meals to people who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves, GLWD heals through food. It provides these meals to every client’s specific medical requirements, all free of charge.

• AIDS United is paving the way for HIV/AIDS prevention for those at-risk through access to HIV testing, treatment and care. This collaborative association supports grantmaking related to sterile syringe access across the country at national and local levels in areas where help is most needed. AIDS United has partnered with Levi Strauss & Co. by providing training for several of our office locations in the United States.

The Hetrick-Martin Institute has fundamentally changed HIV/AIDS education for a young, at-risk population. The Hetrick-Martin Institute is the first and oldest provider of services to young LGBTQ individuals. Not only is the Institute a model for its highly effective HIV/AIDS education, it also partners with the city of New York and shares its expertise at a federal level. Its education program addresses and transforms the root causes of risky behavior through self-esteem, risk screenings and peer-led support groups.

We thank God’s Love We Deliver, AIDS United and the Hetrick-Martin Institute for their courage and tenacity – and offer our congratulations to this outstanding group of pioneers.
