Greenlight for Sustainability

At Levi Strauss & Co., we’re working to build sustainability into everything we do. But we can’t restore the planet alone. So it makes sense to tell others what we’re doing – and hope they’re inspired to make a difference themselves.

This week, my Brussels-based colleagues and I had just such an opportunity. We partnered with Greenlight for Girls, whose ambitious mission is to inspire young girls to change the world.

The organization encourages girls of all ages to pursue a future in mathematics, science and engineering – and to use these tools to address important global challenges like sustainability.

Standing in front of 84 girls, it made sense for us to start the conversation by talking about what Levi Strauss & Co. is doing to incorporate sustainability into our work. And while that covers everything from the kind of lights we use in our buildings to how cotton is grown, on this morning, our focus was on Levi’s® Water<Less™ products. The girls seemed excited to learn how our company rethought our finishing process to significantly reduce the amount of water required to make a pair of jeans.

Next we donned lab coats and learned alongside the girls. We were split intro groups across different water-focused workshops: designing a water-friendly school, exploring how to purify dirty water and trying out different methods of cleaning clothes without using harmful chemicals. We were amazed and inspired by the girls’ creativity and teamwork in approaching these challenges. Clearly, they take their roles in sustainable living seriously!

This activity was particularly resonant for me, having completed my undergraduate degree in Pure Mathematics. Although I now work in Community Affairs, my time at university allowed me plenty of opportunities to hone my problem-solving skills, which have proved useful in all aspects of my life and career.

For me, our cooperation with Greenlight for Girls was a perfect example of living our company values and contributing to our community. Levi Strauss & Co. has worked hard on sustainability innovations, so I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to share some of our insights, which will, I hope, help inspire the next generation of girls to follow suit.
