Just last year, at the age of 22, Katie Spotz rowed across the Atlantic Ocean. It’s time for an encore, also involving water.
Right now, Katie and her friend, Sam Williams, are in the midst of a cross-country bicycle trip. They started their 3,000-mile, non-stop race this past Saturday in Oceanside, Calif. It’s a race, because the goal is to finish, in Annapolis, Maryland, in seven days and 21 hours.
How does a cross-country bike ride involve water (besides drinking a lot of it along the way)? Katie, Sam and support team are raising money for a Blue Planet Network and FARM-Africa project. The goal: Bring water to some of the poorest communities in northern Kenya. Levi’s Shape What’s to Come is sponsoring the race. And you can donate here.
But get this. Just days before the race began, while on a training ride, Katie suffered a crash that fractured her pelvis. Refusing to give up, she located a handbike and set off as planned. You can follow the race here, but I wanted to share this video that gives you an idea of what Katie and Sam are up against given her injury.
Go, Katie!
