The woman had moved to California from Iraq and thought she’d left the explosions behind. Then one ripped through her San Bruno neighborhood last night – killing four people and destroying 38 homes.
Of all the stories I scanned about the explosion, this one stuck with me. She left a country that has seen its share of war and upheaval, only to find death and destruction in her quiet, American neighborhood.
It wasn’t a bomb that wreaked havoc here, but, apparently, a natural gas pipeline that caused the explosion. Investigators will comb the debris to try to determine exactly what happened. And why.
San Bruno is just outside Levi Strauss & Co.’s hometown. Soon, we’ll hear if any of our colleagues were affected and, if so, to what extent. We can only hope for the best, for them and everyone else involved.
As a local company, we’ll do what we can to help the victims – both employees and others. This morning, we announced a clothing donation program, with a $250 gift card for Levi’s® product going to victims of the disaster. We’ve also offered a $25,000 donation to the American Red Cross to aid in the community’s recovery. And the company will match all employee donations toward disaster aid. I’m proud to work for such a place.
If nothing else, what happened last night in a San Francisco suburb tells us that problems can find us anywhere, at anytime – even after we’ve returned home from work and are enjoying dinner with our families.
It’s kind of an unnerving thought, but also a reminder that we need to live life to the fullest and try to enjoy – and be present in – every moment we have, regardless of where we are… in Iraq or San Bruno or wherever you’re reading this.
